Statement
My recently white line woodcuts “Crossing and revolving" #1-#7 are inspired by my experience as a Chinese immigrant in Connecticut. These works express and emphasize the power in witnessing the mixing of cultures. An intertwined and powerful cultural balance in transition between eastern and western cultures and lifestyles are portrayed through the lens of the immigrant experience in my art.
Crossing and Revolving #7 was inspired by my travels in the summer of 2023 through Newfoundland, Canada. It express a combination of the islands, the sea, and the birds. Falling leaves or feathers arise in a new land of high stone walls and rolling waves as a new generation of immigrants. The clustered seabirds clinging to each other on the sea rocks stimulate feelings of new exploration. The waves undulate for the second generation’s navigation of complex cultural and historical intersections between east and west. Without the other shore in sight, there is no turning around.
